I’ve been meaning to write a piece like this for All Weather Racing but with the approaching flat season I’ll warm up with the juvenile code. What first attracted me to this 2yo races? During my year of tinkering with various approaches and methods, I starting researching 2yo races with one objective, to find an edge over my fellow punters.

My thoughts are:

2yo Races Can Offer a Level Playing Field For Punters.
What?  I’m sure many will disagree with this comment given that during the early part of the 2yo season, the form is non existent and stable rumours are abound with respect to certain horses catching the stable cat for fun! Without this knowledge how is the punter supposed to obtain inside knowledge?

Answer breeding! Once you dig deep (and are prepared to put the work in) into the breeding preferences obviously you can’t predict the winner but you can determine likely contenders. By “thinking like a trainer” in respect to the long term intentions of a 2yo you do have an opportunity to offset “inside knowledge”.

Trainer Patterns.
This has been written before but just like all humans, trainers are creatures of habit, utilising the same methods and applying them at the same courses year in year out. Understand these patterns and you will be able to detect which horses will be trying in the race and which ones are being primed for another day. In addition like just all things in life abide by the pareto principle, 20% of trainers win 80% of 2yo races.

2yo Races Offer Value!
During my tinkering of last year, some of my best returns were obtained in 2yo races. The reason is simple, in the absence of hard data such as form, the crowd relies on speculation, rumours, flawed group thinking or are directed by the betting forecast which can at times be an accurate guide to the chances of each runner.In this environment certain horses seem to have their own personal publicity agents and therefore become overvalued by the press and punters. The bookmakers care not about this, their aim is to adjust their liabilities but they are just as much in the dark as punters (sometimes). Conclusion: There is plenty of value for the punter who is prepared to work hard at finding an edge.

Specialist Knowledge
Most punters are lazy so by focusing on this code of racing I can determine factors that most handicappers overlook when approaching 2yo races. Hopefully this will provide that all so important edge I require to be profitable.
