Bath Opening Day Reconnaissance Visit

Posted by slipperytoad as Race Course

Decided to take time off work to visit Bath on opening Day. My objective was to put into practice my course draw/pace configuration theories.

gemI was pleasantly surprised that the course looked so good in the sunshine. A spring clean, a lick of paint and more seating tables on the grass has made a big different to the venue. The bonus for those of us who are particular about which beer they drink, Bath Ales have decided to open their own on course bar!

My virtual stable horse Red Somerset (unbacked by me) ran in a conditions race. Typically in a race consisting of 4 runners, a false pace resulted in the outsider winning at 18/1.

In discussion with the head lad Red Somerset runs at Kempton next Saturday for his final race of the winter all being well when he gets back to the stable.

On the punting front, as normal the gambling gods took their piece of the action when my placepot got blown out in the first race (note to self, give up this for 2009)

7/2 and 100/30 wins in competitive handicaps earlier in the card, the day finished with a flourish via a statistics play on Captain Carey at 4/1.

With wallet contents boosted and pace/draw theories proven I had a spring to my step as I walked home from the course.

Maybe Bath is not a gaff track after all.
