Great Leighs in Administration

Posted by slipperytoad as Race Course

greitleighs_boxIf you take a look at Great Leigh website you’ll read that the racecourse is technically bust and administrators have been appointed. Currently they are in discussion with the British Horseracing Authority to try to secure the course’s racing licence to help it continue to trade.

As I wrote in a previous post, Horseracing in this country is about to feel the chill winds of the worlds (and the UK’s) economic downturn.

Great Leighs was shaping up as punter friendly course (in respect to betting I might add)  let’s hope they sought out theirs issues and gets racing running again. Hopefully the news today  should be the catalyst for other racecourse review their punter pricing strategies.

For far tool long they have been creaming it in!

Further information on this announcement can be found here.

It might have helped if they’d focused on paying customers first so they could secure some income, rather than just getting the races underway. The bookmaking industry is renowned for giving back as little as they can get away with, the paying punters through the gate bring a much higher profit margin.

Is’nt that the problem with horseracing today Scott? Too little focus on the punter and too much pandering to the profits of the turf accountants? When the money goes away unlike the banks, the tax payer wont be bailing them out.

If you think Great Leighs went under because of the credit crunch or the bookmakers margins then you are sadly mistaken.
John Holmes is an Essex bandit, who has previously served time at Her Majesty’s pleasure; be assured his numerous companies will have done very nicely out of it – the money didn’t just evaporate into thin air.
I too am sorry to see it lost as I think the running surface is one of the safest and fairest in the country – it has failed due to one man only.
