Skirmish Saturday

Posted by slipperytoad as Betting Strategy

The winter assault had its first engagement Saturday. Though wounded at times I was fortunate to retain a slight advantage and tactically retreat to fight another day.

The National Hunt Beginners/Novice selections took the full force of the fire fight. Four selections, all four got turned over at very short prices. That was the bad news.

The good news, whether by accident or by virtue of the fact that after many months of watching the ebb and flow of the markets via Bet Trader, I discovered the art of momentum and position trading.

Don’t worry I am under no illusion that I have discovered betting nirvana, however sometimes its easier to predict the direction of the market to “scalp” or based on my opinion of the race, trade my position and let the market form the same opinion after I had taken a few ticks profit in return for my pre race analysis.

Thankfully using the above I was able to resurrect into profit what could have been a disastrous first day for the National Hunt bets.

My father is retired, lives overseas and is a big punter. He’s currently in the UK on holiday for a few weeks and last Saturday we had father and son day in front of Racing UK and At The Races in the Slipperytoad residence.

He’s computer illiterate. He was totally fascinated by the whole concept of betting on-line. For him it’s an alien concept as he still writes out his “5p Super Flag” on betting slips.

What really blew him away while watching the numbers rapidly change on the Bet Trader screen was the concept of backing and laying horses in the same race to engineer a no lose situation whatever the result!

“Son .. That’s one hell of a bet”

I tend to agree, however his “point and shoot” technique (as he often does) on Amber Queen in the 13:30 at Newmarket (I played bookmaker via Betfair) beats any strategy I can think of.
