Wolverhampton Race Course

Unfortunately the blogger software deleted my recent post about my visit to Wolvehampton. Therefore I decided to take the opportunity to update the site with my thoughts and pictures from my visit.

The all weather course and floodlights were unveiled in 1993, and as part of the huge modernisation of the racecourse facilities, a hotel and exhibition hall were also constructed. This year the course was remodernised and the fibresand surface replaced with Polytrack.

From a visitors perspective the layout of the course is fantastic as there are unobstructed views to all parts of the course.

The objective of my visit was to take a look at the new surface.

polytrack surface

Early observations (including my own) are that the new surface provides a level playing field with horses winning from a stride or two behind the leaders and from off the pace. In addition as the surface is still riding deep, horses must show ability to last the distance off a strong pace. If there is no pace then “all bets are off” as the race will be reduced to a sprint off the final turn (3 furlongs from the finish line)

The new surface the draw bias has been debated widely [Racing Forum: http://www.theracingforum.co.uk/cgi-bin/ikonboard/topic.cgi?forum=15&topic=6482]

The effect of the draw is still inconclusive at this time and minimal bets are advised until more data is available.
